Medicare Advantage:

All-in-One Coverage

Discover comprehensive Medicare coverage that combines hospital, medical, and often prescription benefits—plus extra perks—all in one convenient plan.

What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare and are required to provide at least the same level of coverage as Parts A and B. In most cases, they also include additional benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover.

When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, Medicare pays the plan provider a fixed monthly amount to manage your care. In turn, your Medicare Advantage plan becomes your primary coverage—replacing Original Medicare but still regulated by Medicare rules.

Unlike Original Medicare, which uses a nationwide provider network, most Medicare Advantage plans use network-based care, such as HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) or PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) structures. This often results in lower premiums and predictable out-of-pocket costs.

Key Features of Medicare Advantage Plans:
  • Combines Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage into one plan
  • Most plans include Part D (prescription drug coverage)
  • Offers additional benefits like dental, vision, hearing, over-the-counter allowances, transportation, and fitness programs
  • Often includes care coordination and disease management services
  • Typically has lower monthly premiums, though you still pay your Part B premium

What Medicare Advantage Covers

  • Hospital stays and inpatient care
  • Doctor visits and outpatient services
  • Most plans include Part D

How Enrollment works

You’re eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan if:

You are enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B.
You currently live in the plan’s service area. Plan availability varies by county.
You don’t have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) (with some exceptions)

When to Sign up

You can sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan during one of three specific enrollment periods. These periods allow you to enroll, switch plans, or return to Original Medicare based on your eligibility and timing.

The Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window that starts 3 months before you turn 65, includes your birth month, and ends 3 months after. This is your first chance to enroll in Medicare Parts A and B, and add optional coverage like Part C (Medicare Advantage) or Part D (drug coverage). Enrolling during this time helps avoid late penalties.

The Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. During this time, you can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D drug plan. Any changes take effect on January 1 of the following year.

From January 1 to March 31, Medicare Advantage enrollees can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare with or without a Part D plan. Changes take effect the first of the month after the request is made.
